TapRoot’s Ella® software is truly amazing! Not only does it facilitate point-of-care documentation by staff about changes in behavior of residents with dementia, but it also provides decision support by suggesting person-centered interventions that are known to be effective in addressing the behavior. Reducing or eliminating the use of antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, and off-label use of anti-seizure medications needs so be a key strategy as these drugs have serious toxicities. Happily, one of our early pilots with Ella demonstrated a nearly 20% reduction in antipsychotic prescriptions. We attributed this to our staff initiating the nonpharmacologic interventions suggested by the Ella software before reaching out to the healthcare provider for drug therapy.
